Iterested students should study previous YRRC funded projects and contact a potential faculty adviser to develop a research proposal.* Full proposals need to be submitted electronically** by April 16 and notification of awards will be made in May.
YRRC Student Stipends are awarded through a competitive evaluation process. The maximum award for summer research is a $3,000 stipend (based on an hourly rate of $10-$15.00) for student expected field time (not analysis and dissemination). Additionally, grantees may be eligible for free summer housing at RMC and up to $350 for transportation and supplies
Applicants are required to submit a 2-3 page (maximum) written proposal.
Mandatory formatting requirements (1" margins, 12pt font, subheadings).
Please include the following elements:
- Applicant's name, email, major, and physical address
- Name of faculty adviser(s), email
- Project title
- A research proposal: Introduction with clear research objectives & specific methodology
- Citations (not included in page count)
- Map of field area (not included in page count)
- Budget: Travel, minor supplies and expected hours in the field (not included in page count)
- Time frame, proposed summer research schedule (not included in page count)
- Adherence to formatting & proposal guidelines.
- Well written and interesting research question.
- Sound methodology with achievable results.
- Field research component.
- Collaboration with off-campus entities/agencies/NGOs/multiple faculty.
- Demonstrated effort to secure funding from other sources (does not have to be successful).
- Scope of research falls under the YRRC Mission. The project should contribute to a greater understanding of the ecology, geology or social changes in the Yellowstone River ecosystem. If the project is not in the ecosystem then it should be clear how the research will still add to the knowledge and management of the watershed.
- Has an outreach component (public education, dissemination plan).
- Justification of funding for the field portion of research (@ $12.00 hr for first year research students). The majority of the analysis should be on the students own time (independent study or class) during the fall semester.
